Best Things to Do in Amelia Island for Couples & Nature Lovers
For travelers who love nature, slower travel, and meaningful moments, Amelia Island isn’t just another beach town. It’s a place that has woven itself into our personal story.
From morning walks with the sea breeze on your face to afternoons exploring Civil War forts or indulging in shrimp and grits with a view, there’s a rhythm here that makes every trip feel easy and worthwhile.
We’ve been coming here for over 20 years, and whether it’s for family reunions, long weekends, or our wedding, we always find something new to love. Whether you’re a couple craving quiet beach mornings or a solo traveler chasing sunset hikes, there’s a little something for everyone.
And we still haven’t tried every seafood spot in town… but we’re working on it.
Outdoor Adventures You’ll Love
If you’re happiest in hiking shoes or with sand between your toes, Amelia Island delivers. Many of our favorite memories here are the simple ones: walking under shady trees, spotting dolphins offshore, or enjoying the peaceful quiet of sunrise.
If you enjoy active days outside or scenic places to unwind, this section is for you.
Explore Fort Clinch State Park
Fort Clinch is one of our favorite stops on the island. You can walk through a well-preserved Civil War fort, hike or bike scenic trails, or relax along the shoreline. The mix of history, nature, and views makes it easy to spend hours here.

Walk or Bike Egan’s Creek Greenway
This shaded green path cuts through marsh and wooded areas, offering a quieter alternative to beach walks. You’ll often see birds, turtles, and other wildlife. It’s one of our favorite spots for a morning jog or peaceful midday stroll.
This map shows the full Egan’s Creek Greenway Trail and gives more details about what to expect.
Go Horseback Riding on the Beach
Yes, you can actually ride horses along the shore here. It’s one of the few places in the United States where that’s allowed, and it’s a beautiful way to connect with nature in a unique and peaceful way.
Take a Fishing Charter

Alan’s favorite fishing memory on the island? Reeling in multiple bonnethead sharks while cruising the Intracoastal. Whether you’re hoping to catch dinner or just enjoy the water, there are several local guides who offer half-day or full-day trips.
Seasonal Highlight: Sea Turtle Nesting and Hatching (June through October)
Visit during turtle season and you might spot marked nests or even see hatchlings heading to the water. Local volunteers post estimated hatching dates, so if you’re lucky, you could witness something truly special. Just be sure to follow the light restrictions at night and avoid disturbing the nests.
Romantic Things to Do in Amelia Island for Couples
Whether you’re visiting for a honeymoon, anniversary, or just a peaceful weekend away, Amelia Island is full of quiet corners, coastal beauty, and charming experiences that are perfect for two.
Here are some of our favorite couple-friendly things to do:
Stroll the Beach at Sunrise or Under the Stars
We’ve done our fair share of beach walks here.

Alan’s a fan of sunrise strolls, while Morgan prefers nighttime walks under the stars. The sea breeze, soft sand, and peaceful vibe make this one of the simplest but most meaningful ways to slow down together.
Share a Picnic or Sunset Drink
Pack a small cooler or pick up takeout from one of the island’s many restaurants, then find a quiet spot on the beach or a bench overlooking the Intracoastal. No reservations, no dress code, just you, your favorite person, and a Florida sunset.
Enjoy a Couples Massage or Spa Morning
Need a little extra relaxation? Book a massage or spa session while you’re in town.
Morgan has started a Saturday with a hot yoga class and massage and swears it’s the perfect way to ease into vacation mode.
Ride Horses Along the Water
Yes, horseback riding on the beach makes a second appearance here for good reason. It’s one of the most unique and romantic experiences the island offers. Imagine the sound of waves, open shoreline, and just the two of you on horseback.

Casual Fun and Local Flavor
For low-key entertainment and small-town charm, these ideas are perfect for couples, families, or solo travelers who want to explore without a strict schedule.
Wander Downtown Fernandina Beach
Spend an afternoon browsing local shops, enjoying ice cream or fudge, and strolling down to the marina. One visit, we heard a big yacht belonged to Shaquille O’Neal. We didn’t spot him, but the boat was still fun to see.

Grab Ice Cream or Drinks with a View
The upstairs patio at The Salty Pelican is a great place to relax. You can also find plenty of other spots with outdoor seating and laid-back vibes that fit the island atmosphere perfectly.
Putt-Putt and Mini Golf
Great for couples or families, Amelia Island has a few putt-putt spots including Island Falls Adventure Golf and Putt-Putt of Amelia Island at Main Beach.

Want to go all-in on golf? There are also several full-sized courses if you’re looking to spend a few hours on the green.
Water-Based Adventures and Day Trips
We already mentioned fishing earlier, but if you’re especially drawn to the water, there’s more than one way to make the most of Amelia Island’s coastal location.
Book a Boat Tour
Not into fishing? You can still enjoy the views from the water. Several local companies offer scenic boat tours that cruise past historic sites, spot dolphins, or give you a sunset experience from the best seat in the house.
Fishing Charter (Yes, Again)
We mentioned it earlier, but it deserves another nod here. If you’re into fishing, this is one of the best ways to experience the island from the water. Plenty of guides will help you make the most of it.
Day Trip to Cumberland Island
Just across the water lies one of our favorite nearby escapes — Cumberland Island. You’ll find no cars, no crowds, and no high-rises… just wild horses, forest trails, and the hauntingly beautiful ruins of Dungeness Castle. It feels like stepping back in time.

👉 Curious about how to get there and what to expect? We share all the details in our Cumberland Island Day Trip Guide.
